Silk on Silk Ground
Natural pigment dyed silks
What a lovely piece. This is a traditional Central Asian Suzani - the word comes from the Persian word suzan, meaning "needle" - and it's easy to see why these hand-embroidered textiles are so treasured.
The piece is worked on a soft, natural warm ecru cotton ground, completely covered in dense hand stitching. The palette is classic Suzani at its best: rich crimson and coral reds as the heroes, warmed up with mustard gold, dusty rose, and sky blue, and cooled with touches of turquoise, soft purple, and light green.
The composition is beautifully structured. A narrow border of tiny repeating motifs frames a wider outer field filled with large round floral medallions — sunburst rosettes layered in concentric petals — surrounded by curling leafy crescents and radiating X-shaped leaf sprays. Inside all of this sits a defined central panel outlined with a delicate tulip-vine border, holding two grand medallions flanking a diamond-shaped centrepiece, with dagger-shaped leaves pointing inward and every bit of empty space filled in with scrolling tendrils, blossoms, and little paisley (boteh) motifs.
Everything about it — the symmetry, the packed patterning, the joyful colour — is typical of the great Suzani-making tradition of Uzbekistan and Tajikistan, where such pieces were traditionally embroidered by brides and their families as part of a dowry.
A genuine, characterful piece that would look wonderful as a wall hanging - which is exactly how Suzanis are traditionally displayed.
