Our hand-sewn lampshades are made in Dorset by our small team of artisans. We use rare vintage textiles and the finest fabrics and designs sourced from suppliers around the world, including unique linens, silks and hand-blocked prints. All shades are either self-trimmed, or trimmed with silk and each shade has a silk lining and silk covered struts/ring. All lampshades marked available are in stock and can be ordered online, with worldwide shipping. Where shades are shown as sold, we would be happy to remake to any size subject to fabric availability.
Our bespoke lampshades shades are all handmade in England and we would be delighted to make for you. Pricing is dependent on the cost of the fabrics used, the size of the lampshade, the complexity of the design and the finishing required. Shades can be made gathered or pleated, to any size and with either Duplex fittings for the UK/EU or Harp/Finial fittings for our customers in the US.
Please contact us to discuss your ideas and will be pleased to provide a quotation. Our lampshades are favoured by many leading interior designers and decorators. We also welcome new enquiries from the trade.
Handmade LampshadesMade in England by our artisans
Making bespoke shades is quite an art!
The team at Floren carefully select fine unique fabrics to work with and source these from all over the world. We then consider what size and shape of lampshade frame will work best with the fabric design. Careful planning is required to ensure the fabric pattern will sit correctly on the finished lampshade. Pattern repeats need a lot of thought, especially with gathered or pleated shades.
The textile is cut to size and depending on the size of the shade and the pattern repeat, pieces of fabric may be sewn together. Firstly, the lampshade frame top and bottom rings are wrapped with Indian cotton tape. The struts and ring of the lampshade frame are then wrapped in fine satin/silk and when this process is complete we can begin to pin the fabric to the frame. Hundreds of pins are used to ensure that the pleats or spacing is correct and usually 3 passes of the shade are made until we are completely happy.
The next stage is hand-sew the fabric to the top and bottom of the frame. This takes a lot of patience and care is taken not to prick one's fingers with the sharp needle! Once complete, our team then select a suitable lining and much depends on the amount of light that is required to shine through. Normally we will hold up silk linings against the shade and place over a lamp to determine which lining works best. We like to use silks, especially Habotai as these give the most wonderful illumination effects.
The final stage of the process is to select a complimentary trim to finish off the shade. The trims are cut on the bias to allow for stretching and then folded, pressed and applied to the frame, either with glue or hand-stitching.
Each bespoke shade takes up to 3 days to make and we like to think our lampshades are second to none. We are pleased to supply some of the world's greatest designers & interior stores and we delighted that our shades adorn lamps in some of the world's finest homes.
