The History of Flamestitch

Picture this vivid tableau set in Florence, Italy, during the 1600s: In a lively artisan's workshop, a master craftsman meticulously weaves a vibrant Flamestitch pattern. Known by various names such as Bargello, point de Hongrie and Florentine, Irish or Hungarian stitchwork, this art form has deep roots. It may have evolved from a decorative tradition introduced by a Hungarian princess who became part of the Medici family. Here, the jagged point de Hongrie stitch merges with the traditional straight or "brick" stitch, giving birth to the dynamic, variegated motif of the Flamestitch. It's possible that these patterns were also influenced by the Silk Road's ikats, adding to their rich complexity.

There has always been a love of zig-zag shapes and patterns, with the ancient Greeks decorating their villas, 14th Italian century painters embellising archangel's wings on tempura panels and the Swedes portraying kings with flamestitch type robes.

You can see flamestitch everywhere, on an upholstered bench, curtains and carpets, adding a dynamic and lively touch to the room's decor.

From the Middle Ages to Parham House

In another frame, imagine an artefact of Bargello needlework from the Middle Ages. This piece, once a marker of status and opulence, now stands prominently in a museum exhibit. Its intricate stitching weaves a narrative of enduring artisanship, a testament to a craft that has triumphed over the passage of time. From the regal ambiences of royal palaces to the intimate corners of our homes, the art of Flamestitch and Bargello symbolises the unchanging elegance and enduring allure of masterful artisan craftsmanship.

One of the oldest remaining instances was spotted in England. A whole room in the Elizabethan mansion, Parham House, remains upholstered in Italian wool from the 16th century with a flame stitch pattern. The principal bed at Parham House is similarly embellished with flame stitching. In 1922 the house was sold to the Clive and Alicia Pearson. Alicia was a passionate needleworker and through these acquisitions she also brought together one of the finest early needlepoint collections in the UK. The needlework is prominent throughout the property, from the embroidered chairs, to the tapestries, the fabric lined rooms, the grand gallery to that beautiful bargello embroidery bed.
