Silk on Silk Ground
Natural pigment dyed silks
This Suzani has an exuberant floral design worked in rich reds, coral, turquoise blue and muted sage green against a warm ivory ground. Its carefully framed composition balances a formal central arrangement with a dense, freely flowing network of flowers and curling stems.
At the centre is a large, circular red flower head with a turquoise centre and four pale, radiating divisions. A scalloped floral medallion surrounds it, combining smaller red buds, fan-shaped blossoms and blue-green foliage. Two large, split pomegranate-like forms flank this centrepiece, creating a strong horizontal axis.
Across the surrounding field, slender, winding stems carry small rounded red flowers, buds and leaves. Four prominent paisley-shaped motifs—one near each corner of the inner field—contain intricate red-and-blue detailing. The contrast between these larger shapes and the delicate trailing vegetation gives the surface a lively sense of movement.
A narrow inner border repeats small curved, paisley-like forms, alternating in direction and colour. Beyond it, the broad outer border features oversized circular rosettes and deeply scalloped, fan-shaped flowers connected by diagonal leafy branches. A fine outer edging of tiny red flowers and green leaves completes the composition.
