Silk on Cotton Ground
Natural pigment dyed silks
This Suzani has a richly patterned ivory ground, dominated by sweeping crimson-red paisley forms and a dense network of flowering vines. Olive-green stems and leaves weave through the composition, with smaller accents of pink, pale lavender, blue-grey, and golden yellow.
The central field is animated by oversized, curling paisley or boteh—shapes, arranged in a loose, interlocking rhythm rather than around a single central medallion. Some are broad and rounded; others stretch into long, hooked tips, giving the surface a lively sense of movement. Their interiors contain miniature flowers, leafy scrolls, striped sections, and contrasting ornamental bands.
Two particularly prominent curved forms near the centre carry rows of circular rosettes, alternating red floral motifs with darker, closely patterned discs. Around them, smaller blossoms, serrated leaves, buds, and delicate tendrils fill almost every available space, while the pale background keeps the intricate design legible.
