Edo Period Teal Green Japanese Brocade
The teal green Japanese brocade piece is something special.
The Edo period ( 603 till 1868) in Japan was a long period of national seclusion and peace; a time of high cultural development.
To my mind, the best textiles were made in this period, depicting a very refined aesthetic and excellent pre industrial workmanship.
These pieces are very rare and I have never seen anything like it!
The design is a micture of a turtle and an archaic calligraphy, going way back beyond the Edo period in older Japanese times.
The turtle is a symbol of longevity and together with the archaic calligraphy, the textile is an expression of long life and traditional values. Such a fine and expensive silk was most likely a new year gift for a high ranking person.
This textile is very beautiful and elegant.
