Ceremonial shawl or hanging in sewn silk strips from Djerba, Tunisia
A ceremonial shawl or hanging in sewn silk strips from Djerba, Tunisia, dating from the first half of the 20th century. Wide bands of shaped silk alternate with narrower stripes of very strong polychromy and golden yellow silk fringes on one end. Tunis was famous in the 19th century for its weaving of shaped silk and ribbons, and this is a fascinating example of Tunisian craftsmanship. Traces of indigo blue printing and colour migration add a great deal of authenticity to this beautiful piece for decorative use. A few very rare small holes in 5 to 6 areas which do not call into question the fluidity and solidity of this shawl. The red silk bands are in poor condition. The colours are good, the condition is average but stable and usable.
4 cm of fringes.
