Silk Sari Odisha India Early 20th C
Silk Sari, Odisha, India, Early 20th C. Silk, gold thread, weft ikat and supplementary warp weave.

A superb example of an Odisha sari. Odisha saris emulated the legendary double-ikat patola cloths of Gujarat, and this sari exemplifies this in both design and technique. It replicates a famous patola floral grid motif in the centrefield, and its side bands depict the elephants, dancers, bird and flowers also found in patola. With technique, it notably uses both warp ikat, in the side bands, as well as weft ikat in the centrefield, and to this is added gold threads, found in the most refined of saris, in elegant bands of supplementary warp.

Ex-collection Professor P. Gould who was professor of Art History at Columbia University and Sarah Lawrence College, and who had a noted Asian textile collection.
