Uzbek Jiyak Braid
15mm wide. Sold by the Metre
Jiyak is a traditional Uzbek decorative braid or narrow trim, usually made from brightly coloured silk, cotton, or wool threads. It is used to decorate collars, cuffs, hems, hats, and other textiles, and may include repeated geometric or symbolic patterns.
The threads are first prepared, coloured, and arranged in a planned pattern. The braid is then woven on a small tablet-weaving setup: the threads pass through holes in small cards or tablets, while the weaver turns the tablets in sequence to raise and cross the threads. A simple loom or frame, with pegs or clamps to hold the threads under tension, helps keep the braid straight as it is formed.
After weaving, the finished Jiyak is cut to the required length and sewn along the edge of a garment or textile. This produces a strong, colourful border that both decorates and neatly finishes the fabric.
