Silk on Silk Ground
Natural pigment dyed silks
This piece is a contemporary Suzani - a large, newly made, hand-embroidered textile from Central Asia, worked in silk on a cream cotton ground made of joined vertical strips. It's in excellent condition, with fresh, vibrant colours throughout.
The design is wonderfully symmetrical and full of character. At the centre sits a large diamond-shaped medallion holding a many-petaled rosette, surrounded by sweeping boteh (paisley) motifs and plump red pomegranates, all linked together by delicate curling vines. Around the edges run narrow borders of small flowering vines, and the whole thing is finished with a cheerful striped binding in red, green, white, and blue.
The colours are mostly rich reds — crimson, ruby, coral, and rust — lifted by sage and olive greens, soft lavender-blue, mustard yellow, and white. The stitching is fine tambour chain stitch, which gives those crisp outlines and textured fills that make suzani embroidery so appealing.
The motifs themselves carry lovely symbolism from the region's long textile tradition: the boteh represent eternal life, and the pomegranates abundance and prosperity. All in all, it's a beautiful, freshly worked example of the suzani craft, made today using the same techniques and patterns that have been passed down for generations.195 x 256 cm
