Richard was a member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters and also exhibited at the Royal Academy of Art, the Royal College of Art, the NEAC, ROI, RSMA and RWA annual opens. In 2012 he was appointed to the Royal Institute of Oil Painters (ROI). Richard was Artist in Residence for Jubilee Year at the Hurlingham Club, London.

Sadly, Richard passed away in 2018 and he is a huge loss to everyone who knew him and his work. He was a wonderfully talented painter and teacher.

We are fortunate to have over 80 of Richard's original oil paintings available for sale via his sister Lindsay Coleman, who is an executor of the Trust established to support Richard’s family.

While some of his work was done in the studio, Richard was essentially a 'plein air' painter and was often to be seen out and about with his easel in all weathers and all times of day, somewhere on the edge of Poole Harbour. The challenge of this type of work is in being able to rapidly analyse colour and tone at the same time as capturing the constantly moving drama of the environment.

Richard’s work is concerned with light and atmosphere and falls within the traditions of artists such as Turner and Sickert. His gift was an ability to assess colour; its temperature and tone while working within the inevitable confines of time. Equally at home with interiors or figures painted contra jour, more typically he painted seascapes with the changing lights, enjoying the shapes and drama of backlit clouds. Coloured light shining through windbreaks on the beach was another favourite.

Please enjoy the exhibition and these reasonably price original works.
