Decorative and functional wheel-thrown vessels, with quiet harmony of form and colour
Lucy Burley studied Ceramics at both Wimbledon and Camberwell Art Schools, graduating with a BA Honours in 1996. After her graduation, she set up in a shared studio in Battersea and began to make and sell work at open studios and craft fairs. In 2000 she moved to Farnham, and for two years had a studio at Farnham Pottery. For fifteen years Lucy worked from a rural studio in Kingsley, Hampshire and now works from a garden studio at home, as well as teaching ceramics to adults and children across Surrey and Hampshire.
Lucy's work is both decorative and functional: simple shapes which make sculptural groups. She is inspired by Giorgio Morandi's still-life paintings and wants her work to have the same harmony of form and colour. Her vessels are thrown on the wheel using white earthenware clay. Lucy has developed a semi-matt earthenware glaze, smooth to the touch, to which she adds oxides and stains to obtain a wide spectrum of colours. She sells through numerous galleries, shops and craft fairs.
